Guide to Traveling with Jewelry

Pure Georgette Salwar Kameez

What better way is there to celebrate hard work than with a day off? Labor day is approaching, and you might find yourself traveling for quick vacation or to visit friends and family. Wherever your holiday plans take you, be sure your favorite jewelry is taken care of.

First it’s important to determine what items you will need to pack. It’s most helpful to choose your jewelry after you’ve packed your clothing. Then choose the jewelry that will pair well with the most outfits. This way, you will be sure not to overpack unnecessary jewelry. Choose go-to pieces like a string of pearls or diamond studs. You should also avoid bringing items that are highly valuable, sentimental or otherwise irreplaceable.

Once you choose the items you need to take with you, make sure you write down the items so you remember what needs to be accounted for. You should also take photos of each of the items you are bringing with you. If you are traveling with highly valuable jewelry, then it may be worth getting insurance for the duration of your trip.

If you are flying to your destination, then there are a few precautions you should take before going through airport security. First, you should never keep your valuable items in checked bags; always keep your valuables in your carry on. Next, do not wear your jewelry through airport security. For security purposes, it’s best to remove your jewelry and keep it away in your bag to avoid unwanted attention.

Once you arrive to your destination, find a safe place to keep your jewelry when you are not wearing it. This could be in the safe in your hotel room or, if available, a safety deposit box at the hotel. Don’t leave your valuables out if you are going to be gone from your room.

There are other important things to keep in mind depending on your destination. If you are traveling through a crowded, metropolitan area on the way to your destination, you may want to conceal your expensive items to avoid theft. For example, tuck a pendant into your shirt and turn your ring around so it looks like a simple band.

If you are traveling to the beach, then you should consider the importance of bringing any jewelry at all. However, some items will fare better than others. Durable metals like gold and platinum will typically fare well, though they may get scratched. Hard gemstones like diamonds, sapphires and emeralds will also fare well as they are highly scratch-resistant. Avoid taking gold vermeil, plated jewelry and silver to the beach, as these items are likely to be damaged by the sand and/or salt water.
Always remember to remove your rings before swimming. Cold water constricts blood flow, causing your skin to tighten. This makes it easy to lose a valuable ring. Remember to take off your ring before swimming, preferably indoors before you leave your room.

When in doubt, your best bet is to leave your jewelry a place you know is safe and secure or leave it at home.
